Rough textures. The scenes are dramatic and do not flow smoothly as we get closer to finding the killer.

The movies focal point is the families’ memories. Their points of view on scenarios drive the investigator further until he can find the true killer.

Dinner & A Movie : Research
MOVIE “A” Title: Knives Out
Gather at least three pieces of information about the movie. See below info to get the “research wheels” turning.
o Is the movie based off a book? Who wrote the book, when was book first published, how does the content in the book and movie differ? Are there elements from the book you can incorporate?
The movie is not based on a book. It takes inspiration from various “who dunnit” movies.
o Is the movie based off a fairy tale/folklore? If so, what is the original story/meaning and how can you use to develop an idea?
Knives Out is not based on any fairytale or folklore. Its commonly compared to movies like “Sleuth” or “Clue”.
o When was the movie released? Does the time period (cultural/social/political) contribute to meaning of movie?
This movie was released in 2019. This is fairly recent and a big societal issue today is about privilege. Marta’s mother is an undocumented immigrant, which she is blackmailed for. The family all feel entitled to Harman’s fortune and they cannot fathom why he would give it to Marta. Possibly the social issue of phones being constantly used could be referenced too.

Ask yourself how the object or design of objects are significant to the story you want to tell. Consider all options and write down your thoughts. See prompts below.
o Is there a particular scene, character or event in the movie you want to focus on?
No, I am focused on the movie as a whole. The more you look, the more you see what is wrong and what is on the plate.
o Can you narrow down a theme? Magic? Mystery? If so, what events and emotions associated with the theme?
The theme is privilege. The family having to leave when Marta gets everything is a big event. Also the investigator taking her side and helping as much as he can is important. Emotions associated are curiosity, sneaky, loathing, disappointment, and anger.
o Good magic? Bad magic? A thriller mystery? A lighthearted mystery?
A thriller mystery.
o Will the final solution reflect mayhem? Order? Both?
Order is shown in the end. The murderer is sent to jail and the family loses. Marta is rightfully given the inheritance.
o Will you use traditional objects? If so, how will you use with innovation? Stack plates to communicate layers, time, weight?
I will use objects rather than real food. Red Gatorade will be used to represent blood. The items will be sectioned according to the item to communicate layers in the scenes. Knives of course will be used because its one of the main concepts.
o Or will you substitute objects? For instance, use another object for a plate. What appears on “the plate”?
I will use a plate. I plan on using dirt, sharp objects like pins, ripped letters, red Gatorade, knives, pills, and candles.
