My sculptures reflect the environmental issues of water and nature pollution. In my first sculpture, Overtaken, a woman is being engulfed with vines. Her eyes have grown into flowers. The vines are coming out of the flower on her back. The vines wrapping around her are representing nature taking back over. We as humans build and destroy habitats, yet there will come a time where nature will rebuild itself and take back the world. We cannot stop nature from growing. The woman is calm and at peace. She is allowing the vines to grow and has become one with the flowers, which are in color to show the vibrance and light our environment brings to us. Overtaken is also on a green and tall block to show nature "ruling over" whilst taking back over; she is high up and oversees the rest of pollution that has not been recaptured yet. In my second sculpture, Plasticut, a woman has been cut and lodged with sharp pieces of plastic. She looks worried and stuck in an uncomfortable position. This sculpture is representing water pollution. The amount of plastic that is found in oceans, rivers, and even drinking water is obscene. Not only can plastics have negative effects on humans when we consume it, but animals can be severely harmed in the process as well. The woman is being cut with the plastic as our effect in non-biodegradable items pollute the environment. The cuts and plastic stay with her; she is unable to move away from the harm. There is also plastic around her neck to show the hold that plastic has on us as we continue to utilize the product, despite its negative effects. The cuts have blue pastel in them too; I felt red was too harsh. I chose blue to reference the water that is being polluted by plastic. The blue pastel guides the eyes and pairs with the base much better. She is on a blue block to represent water that the plastic is polluting. The block is short because water is normally flat and low on Earth. The pollution can float on top, as seen with Plasticut in front of all the blue base. Together, my sculptures form the environmental issues we face through pollution and the effect this has on nature. Nature is taking over and watching what we do in Overtaken. Plasticut shows how bad plastic is as our water is polluted and significantly under nature, which means our environment will be taken back eventually.
