Foam & Plaster Sculpture 2
Artist Statement:
My piece is titled The Ugly Duckling. My work, made of plaster, nails, skewers, and foam, is made to create an uncomfortable feeling for the viewer. To accomplish this feeling I made the object difficult to stand on its own, the plaster uneven, and the angled foam is randomly sticking out. I wanted to make this work hard for the viewer to look at and uneven so that you must be careful and cautious around my work. Unlike my last piece, which can be displayed at any angle, this one is much more fragile and weird to look at in comparison. I want to deter the viewer almost and make the work uncomfortable to not only look at, but just by being around the production.
I am inspired by John Newman and Lynda Benglis for my arts’ construction. Newman’s odd shapes helped me pick out the form. I looked at his various angles and shapes used in the works, which is where I made the idea for my almost tree-like shape. Benglis’ work appears heavy and is textured, which is where I got the final look. Her rough shapes and scratchy texture led me to the completed design. Overall, these two artists inspired me the most to create my purposefully uncomfortable work. This project taught me that I will not love everything I make and the failures are extremely important in the learning process.
