Group Project House

We began toying with the idea of a town or city. After discussing the various ways we could go about our idea, we somehow ended up with the idea of a house. We all put a few random words that popped into our heads and put them in a bucket. We ended up looking through all the ideas and picking our favorite words. The best words were doom, gloom, otherworldly, different dimensions, dark, and fairy. The overall theme of our home will be dark and gloomy. There are little metaphoric easter eggs to look for between the rooms. Each of us is using our favorite medium; Mariah is using clay for the kitchen, Danielle is using wire for the attic, Shauna is using textiles and plaster for the bathroom, Sophie is using wood for the bedroom, and I am using found objects for the living room. Everyone is going about their room in a personal way. The final sculpture will stack on top of one another or hang next to each other on the wall. Our final presentation is stacked currently.

AI Artist Statement: *based on the first paragraph at the top of this page*
Our group project is a collaborative effort that explores the different dimensions of a dark and otherworldly house. We drew inspiration from a variety of sources, including our own personal interests and the random words that we picked from a bucket. Through our individual mediums, we aim to create a cohesive and immersive experience that invites viewers to explore the intricate details of each room.
Each of us is working on a specific part of the house, from the kitchen to the attic, the bathroom, the bedroom, and the living room. Mariah is using clay to create a kitchen that is both eerie and inviting, with strange and twisted shapes that reflect the overall theme of the project. Danielle is using wire to create an attic that is both haunting and whimsical, with intricate patterns that capture the imagination.
Shauna is using textiles and plaster to create a bathroom that is both beautiful and unsettling, with unexpected textures and colors that challenge our expectations. Sophie is using wood to create a bedroom that is both dreamlike and nightmarish, with intricate carvings that reveal hidden meanings and symbolism. I am using found objects to create a living room that is both familiar and alien, with strange and unexpected objects that hint at a deeper story.
Despite our individual approaches, we are all working towards a common goal: to create a final sculpture that is greater than the sum of its parts. Whether the sculpture is stacked on top of each other or hung side by side, we hope that it will invite viewers to explore the different dimensions of the house, and to discover the little metaphoric easter eggs that we have hidden within each room.
Overall, our project is a reflection of our shared interest in exploring the darker and more mysterious aspects of the human psyche. We hope that it will inspire viewers to look beyond the surface and to engage with the deeper themes and ideas that we have woven into our work.

Personal Artist Statement:
To create my final sculpture, I started making my wood base 7x7. I nailed the pieces of wood together and then painted the outside black and the inside white. I carefully searched through all the electronic scraps outside and took apart some randomly discarded items to get my pieces. I took my time picking out the best pieces possible. I ended up finding enough pieces to make a side table, couch, ottoman, TV, TV stand, lamp, window, wall decor, and fan. I hot glued the pieces together and then spraypainted them in matte black to contrast with the walls. Then, the pieces were positioned and glued into the box. I kept the color monotone and bland to pair with our theme correctly. I added a red splatter on the floor to imitate blood. This is meant to be matching with Sophies' bleeding wings and Danielles' bloody attic. I wanted the room to look obviously like a living room, but finding the pieces at first was a bit difficult. I am so excited about the outcome and feel like the space actually looks like a living room. I would love to continue this project and make a whole house by myself as an installation. I would have the rooms be various sizes, however, they would still be stackable.
I am relating my historical precedence to the artist Kara Walker. Her utilization of solid black cutouts is extremely similar to my matte black furniture. Walker's work explores black culture through beautiful silhouette cut-outs. The work I saw is absolutely amazing. The details in each piece are so impeccable that the viewer is able to clearly see what is going on even with the lack of dimension from the matte black color. My furniture pieces are flat and black, but up close you are able to see finer details. There are bowls with food in them and even cups on the table. Viewers can see these details even with the lack of visual dimensions. Both Walker and I utilize the matte effect paired with the dark color to emphasize shape rather than fine detailed dimensions and color.
This group project was the best group project I have ever done. We were all able to make our own individual rooms and use the materials of our choosing. Though the work was done individually, coming together for the initial idea and putting our brain power together was great. Our pieces visually go together as well and pair nicely with one another. I would love to be able to hang them too. The theme of decay and doom is visually represented throughout the work. Each piece is unique to the person and has specialized details depending on the room. Up close, the viewer is able to see just what is going on. I think we nailed the idea that this is a gloomy house where something bad has happened. Altogether, our rooms form a house that encases our specialties as artists. Including all our mediums together makes for a very unique home. The detail and work put into the rooms is so amazing to see. I think other classes should have the chance to do this project too. I would love to see what else everyone could come up with. The most difficult part was making sure that the rooms could stack together. Everyone being able to work separately, but be aware of the main theme surrounding the work was extremely beneficial. The freedom of having our own spaces to then add to make an entire house was lovely. The best part of this project for me was seeing the final product.
