Mold & Modeling Sculpture

Image
Artist Statement:      After four attempts on this project, I ended up with mini water bottle sculptures. After I made multiple molds for the bottles, I poured a couple of each to end up with a handful of them. I trimmed each piece with an exacto-knife to clean them up a bit. I stacked up the water bottles to put emphasis on our worldly plastic issue, especially about single-use plastic water bottles. These were relatively easy to create as the mold was already there, as is for making the real bottles. We overproduce so many and they end up in our environment, killing animals and us as humans. If we stop producing these harmful bottles altogether, our environment would begin to improve significantly. Micro-plastics are coming back to harm humans. I hope to shed light on the overproduction of plastic bottles through my final piece. The final work is photographed in the greenery to show emphasis on the amount of plastic pollution in our environment.     ...

Foam & Plaster Sculpture 2

Image
Artist Statement: My piece is titled The Ugly Duckling . My work, made of plaster, nails, skewers, and foam, is made to create an uncomfortable feeling for the viewer. To accomplish this feeling I made the object difficult to stand on its own, the plaster uneven, and the angled foam is randomly sticking out. I wanted to make this work hard for the viewer to look at and uneven so that you must be careful and cautious around my work. Unlike my last piece, which can be displayed at any angle, this one is much more fragile and weird to look at in comparison. I want to deter the viewer almost and make the work uncomfortable to not only look at, but just by being around the production.       I am inspired by John Newman and Lynda Benglis for my arts’ construction. Newman’s odd shapes helped me pick out the form. I looked at his various angles and shapes used in the works, which is where I made the idea for my almost tree-like shape. Benglis’ work appears heavy and is tex...

Wood Sculpture 1

Image
Artist Statement:      I originally wanted to make a diamond-shaped chain, but created a unique form as I continued my design process. As I began to cut my woods angles and then into halves, I realized that a chain would feel too simple to me. I decided to experiment in stacking my work and ended up with my final piece. I rounded my diamonds and sanded the wood down so that my object would feel softer. Wood is a hard material, so I wanted to challenge that pointy feeling. I also included my in progress images to show the various ways I was considering to nail my art in the final form. I photographed my final piece from different angles to show that there is not one way to set up my work. I prefer to view art from various angles and be able to touch the work too. I wanted to encourage this in my work, which is why there are so many ways to balance the piece.

Final Dinner & A Movie

Image
Final Image: Askew Dining Movie Inspiration: Knives Out Detail Image: Artist statement:       The separation in placement is to represent the division between social classes; the privileged, upper-class family is not willing to accept that the inheritance has gone to the fathers' nurse, Marta. The paper is for the family that has been 'ripped apart' due to the finalized documents stating who gets what in the will. The dark red liquid is for the bloodshed battle between the families dispute for greed. Blood is also the main clue in finding who the true murderer is. The pins with red tops are scattered as everyone seems on edge to find out whodunit and how the clues do not line up with each other. The detective is sharp and looking out in all directions to find any information they can, similar to how the needles are placed. They are small, yet all come together making a pile of important information. The black pills look like the dirt spilling out, referencing the enc...

Gregor's Room

In Process Photos: Final Images Gregor: Gregor, Himself Paper and Ink 1.5" x 1.5" x 1.5" Side-Table & Alarm Clock (Furniture Piece): Get Up Paper and Ink 1.75" x 2.5" x 1.25" Gregor's Bed: Filthy Sleep Sack Paper and Ink 6.5" x 5" x 8" Details: Artist Statement:      I saw Gregor's room as a filthy, yet somehow comforting area. Gregor came off as a mass of color to me. He is not one solid color, but many different splotches mashed into one lump. He is all the colors of his room and more. Gregor's bed is lumpy and uneven, but he is comfortable in his own area. He weighs down the middle as if he has been sitting there for a while. I felt this story reflected depression. To me, Gregor did not want to leave or move around, he was content with his comfy bed and room. Blue is a depressing color, yet can be calming as well. Gregor, his blankets, pillow, and stuffed animal are all blue referencing the deep meanings they have to him. ...
